Poetry Contest!


Learning Resource Center Poetry Contest


To celebrate National Poetry Month the Learning Resource Center will be hosting a Poetry Competition!

Winners will have their poem hung in the library for all to see – and have the option of having a recording done of them performing their poem which will be provided to them on a DVD. Each poem* will be performed in front of a panel of 3 judges. They will choose the winning entry for each category.  Categories are ABC Poem, Cinquain Poem, Haiku, Limerick, Rhyme, and Free Verse. Descriptions of each category are included in this packet. While different rules may exist online, for the purposes of judging only the rules laid out in the packet will be used.

Entering is easy: A person can enter up to 2 poems in each category. Entries must be submitted via email to sleif@iadtvegas.com with the subject Poetry Contest and the body containing your Name, Student ID Number, Category you are entering, Poem Title, and Poem.


Official Rules:


  • You may enter any category you want, and as many categories as you want.
  • Maximum of 2 entries per student per category (maximum of 12 entries).
  • Submissions will only be accepted via email to sleif@iadtvegas.com with your Name, Student ID Number, Category, Title and Poem. If submitting multiple poems, each poem must be sent in a separate email.
  • Poem performances are required*.
  • Poem length can vary, but cannot exceed 3 minutes.
  • As a school event, poems should be without vulgarity, offensive, and racially charged words. Submissions with inappropriately determined language will be disqualified.
  • By entering the competition you are giving the library permission to display your poem, with your name prominently displayed, in the LRC if your poem is chosen as the winner of a category.
  • * If more than 30 poems are entered for any specific category, the judges reserve the right to preview the poems and select only the best 30 for performance in that category.

11:59PM on Monday, April 2nd, 2012.
